Issue
Retail crime, including shoplifting as requested by local retail and partners through the regular BID partnership meetings.
Action
St Michael neighbourhood team have been focusing on business crime (including retail crime). We have identified a number of people who are causing our communities the most harm. There have been a number of people arrested and processed through the court system. We intend to continue to work with stakeholders, businesses and the community to robustly manage these individuals using the powers available to us.
Several Criminal Behaviour Orders (CBO) have been granted following applications to the Court. These orders prohibit the individual concerned from entering the City Centre and doing so constitutes a breach and is a criminal offence. Several individuals have been arrested for such breaches and subsequently received custodial sentences.
The St Michael's Team will continue to target these individuals and use all available tools to prevent them causing further harm.
Issue
ASB, drinking alcohol and begging within the city centre focusing primarily on Broadgate and surrounding areas. This can have a detrimental effect on lives of many members of public who work, study or visit the city everyday. We will continue to work closely with stakeholders and partners to identify key nominals and focus resources in the right areas, at the right times.
Further more, St Micheals neighbourhood team will continue to focus on the use of eBikes and eScooters in the city centre. There is a PSPO in place to ensure safe and responsible riding - however, some eBikes and eScooters are illegal and unsafe. We will work closely with stakeholders, retailers and businesses to ensure we focus resources in the right place at the right times.
Action
A public space protection order has been obtained by Coventry city council which will be used by a range of stakeholders to address the identified increase in ASB, street drinking and low level, high volume crime (such as shoplifting). The PSPO will support other policing powers. There have been multi-agency deployments and this will continue, focusing on the small number of individuals that cause the most harm.
Engagements with eBike cyclist will continue to offer advice and guidance on the PSPO and safer rising principles. Those using illegal eBikes / or eScooters will be dealt with proportionately including seizing their vehicles under Road Traffic legislation and reported to the courts.
Issue
Residential burglary is currently a priority across Coventry LPA.
Action
Whilst burglary rates remain low across St Michael's this is still a focus for us. HMO's and Student accommodation can be particularly vulnerable and as such the team carry out regular patrols offering crime prevention advice. These patrols will continue with the darker nights coming.
Issue
Robbery and theft from the person are currently priorities across St Michael's with the Christmas period approaching.
Action
With the run up to Christmas there will naturally be more people using the City Centre for shopping and socialising. To help prevent offences such as robberies and thefts, officers from the St Michael's team conduct daily patrols of key locations, both in uniform and also in plain clothes. Any groups seen gathering with a view to cause ASB will be spoken to and dispersed using relevant legislation.
