Northumberland is one of the largest counties to police in England and Wales in terms of square miles. Save for the south east corner it is a largely rural county. We have police bases in Berwick, Alnwick, Morpeth, Ashington, Bedlington, Blyth, Prudhoe and Hexham.

Current Priorities

Issue

Youth related ASB, vehicle ASB and damage in Sele Park and Wentworth Car Par, Hexham

Action

We are working with partners to look at increasing CCTV. High visibility patrols are being carried out in key locations to prevent further ASB. Neighbourhood teams are using dispersal powers, ASB legislation and diversion referrals where appropriate.

Issue

Drug related issues in Haltwhistle

Action

We are working to gather more intelligence on those involved. Working with partners to look at tenancy enforcement, closure orders and diversionary measures.

Issue

Rural and cross border crime

Action

Due to the vast rural and agricultural areas within West Tynedale it is a target for high value farming vehicles, fuel and equipment. Intelligence gathering and previous arrests show the offenders to be from outside the area, committing high value cross border thefts. NPT work alongside our Rural Crime team to engage with the farming and rural communities, providing crime prevention and property advice, conducting regular police operations with the support of rural crime volunteers while also working with neighbouring forces to target offenders and share information.
