Newcastle is world-renowned for its nightlife, culture, heritage and sporting venues. Its suburbs are largely residential and Newcastle is also one of the most diverse areas in our force. We have police bases in the city centre, the West End, Byker and Etal Lane, plus a team stationed within the international airport.

Current Priorities

Issue

Prevent and deter sexual offending within the night time economy

Action

Operation Cloak involves the use of plain-clothed officers placed in busy areas looking for signs someone may be vulnerable and identifying people who may be out to commit offences. Partners in the local authority, licensees, door supervisors, hotel staff and taxi drivers work together to help ensure people can enjoy a night out. A Safe Haven van is available every Friday and Saturday night to provide medical assistance or a safe place for those in need.

Issue

Begging linked to anti-social behaviour and street drinking

Action

The neighbourhood team are working with businesses and members of the public. A new partnership approach has been adopted with local authorities, to balance support for those in need of genuine safeguarding, while deterring repeat offenders through police action.

Issue

Serious violence

Action

Working with the City Safe team to identify offenders early and target key individuals. By seeking appropriate disruption orders to prevent offending and disrupt behaviour. We will also work with out-reach teams to divert individuals away from violence.
