Current Priorities
Issue
Op Culture:
An operation devised to target and reduce alcohol, drugs and new psychoactive substances within Scarborough’s urban areas. The new Public Space Protection order is soon to come in to effect.
Action
We are undertaking regular patrols to engage with offenders. We are updating our processes to ensure a timely diversion is in place for substance misuse service referrals.
Civil powers such as Community Protection Notices and Injunctions are being used to enforce upon repeat offenders.
We are engaging with businesses to ensure that the licensing act is complied with.
We are also encouraging reporting of all incidents to assist with prosecutions.
Issue
Op Beat:
This operation has been created by local officers to prevent young people from entering the criminal justice system. Using methods of intervention and diversion at the earliest Police engagement, officers work with a multi-agency team and workshops to prevent a continuation of behaviours which are detrimental to young people.
Action
High visibility patrols used to engage with young people within Scarborough. Specific officers have taken on a role to ensure that all young people who have begun to come to Police attention, have access to diversion schemes and it is explained to them and their parents/guardians.
Issue
Op Clutch (previously Custom)
Tackling anti-social related driving in Scarborough. With two bays in the town, there is a large attraction for car owners to meet in Scarborough. Unfortunately, there is also an element of those who want to act anti-socially with their vehicles. Dedicated officers engage with groups of drivers who regularly meet up in hotspots in the town, with officers looking to build bridges within the car community and offer advice where required.
Those behaving in anti-social or dangerous driving incidents may find themselves being prosecuted.
Action
High visibility patrols to deter anti-social driving. Unmarked patrols to catch offenders. Dedicated officers have been offering advice at colleges about road safety, peer pressures and the responsibility of being a passenger.
We are continuing to patrol our hotspots and engage with car enthusiasts.
Speed checks are also conducted in hotspot locations.
Issue
Op Downtown:
We are using a multi-agency team to reduce the risk for offenders to take advantage of persons engaging in the night-time economy and to reduce alcohol related violence. Following a recent strategic threat risk assessment, there is a focus on violence against women and girls (VAWG) which includes utilising door supervisors and the staff within the premises to monitor and advise on the safety of their customers.
Action
Visits to premises within the night-time economy to ensure a high visibility presence. Engaging with security teams and street angels and encouraging reporting of suspicious activity.
Using a multi-agency training module for working groups such as taxi drivers, door supervisors etc.
Using stop search powers where relevant for concerns around weapons or drugs.
Engaging with our communities, to ensure we are giving the correct level of service to our public.
Operation Vigilant has been created to focus patrols on incidents which are linked to VAWG.
Issue
Operation Receipt (previously op carol)
Operation Receipt was created to target criminality in Scarborough through shoplifting. Using both visible and plain clothed patrols, hotspots are being patrolled to deter and prevent theft. Targeted patrols are being undertaken using local intelligence and crime statistics.
Action
There is on-going work between the Community Safety Hub and the Anti-Theft Group.
Businesses now have an easier method to report thefts electronically, which reduces the time of investigations.
