East Midlands Airport covers the whole of the airport environs. EMA is an international airport handling up to 5 million passengers per year. The airport is also the largest pure freight hub in the UK with several major cargo providers who transport worldwide.

Whilst there are no residential houses on the beat we have a thriving community made up of passengers, employees and people visiting the airport. There are also four hotels and numerous business premises on site.

To provide public reassurance by working in partnership with companies, user groups and local residents, to build a safer and secure environment for workers, passengers and local residents at both the airport site and in the wider airport community, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

To target motorists exceeding the speed limit of 30mph on airport roads between the hours of 4pm and 8pm daily.

To improve the access and egress for legitimate vehicles needing access to business addresses in and around East Midlands Airport during standard business hours.

Action

continuing to advise drivers and move on offending vehicles across the site where they are parked dangerously or unauthorised as part of our routine patrols. The traffic cones remain at key pull-ins on the A453 and have proved successful in maintaining the clearway. There is improved signage across the airport site to all car parks and the drop-off zones. Additional signage has been erected to enforce clearway zones close to the terminal where vehicles commonly drop-off in dangerous locations. This problem will always exist on the airport roads but after consultation with businesses and site users we have been advised that the issue is no longer at a level where it should be considered a priority. We will continue to deal with problem parking as part of our daily deployment, however this will be closed as a beat priority.

Action

by providing reassurance patrols across the site on a daily basis, while the flight protection team go out into the wider community to liaise with residents and workers, informing them of the work being done and improving public confidence. Project Griffin, a national anti terrorism programme is working to educate and raise the awareness of employees on site and nearby businesses and residents. The regular sessions engage delegates, improve links and build a safer, secure environment. A newsletter compiled with the support of local businesses is distributed to businesses and residents within the airport community to update them with relevant information and advise them of the work being done. This is an ongoing issue and the priority will remain in place.

Action

We have consulted with individual businesses and offered support if drivers refuse to take advice when they are approached. We have met with the airport management team, who have installed road spikes to prevent vehicles committing dangerous u-turn manoeuvres on the terminal approach. Traffic cones have been placed at all key pull-in / unauthorised stopping places on the A453 between the Pegasus roundabout and the DHL entrance to prevent waiting and dangerous parking. As part of our routine patrols we have advised drivers and moved vehicles on across the site where they are parked dangerously or unauthorised. We have recently visited key business victims who have advised us that the problem has subsided. However, this may be as a result of the â??winterâ?? passenger flow and therefore we have decided to continue with this priority into the spring season.
